Spalting in wood occurs when fungus colonizes the wood, leaving behind dark lines and dots. It is highly prized by wood workers because the right conditions need to be present for spalting to occur. The tree is usually under stress and is in a hot and moist condition. 
This bowl is very unique because the cedar is a slice of the tree trunk or branch. In woodworking terms, this is called a “cookie.” The reddish cedar color is prominent but also displays some beautiful lighter color, which is the sapwood . The sapwood is the outer part of the tree which surrounds the reddish part commonly known as the heartwood. A combination of green and purple epoxy resin was used to fill the gaps in the cedar. This bowl has been finished with three coats of lacquer and three coats of wax and buffed to a smooth and glossy finish.Eastern Red Cedar and Epoxy bowl/dish.
